My computer crashed and when I restarted I got an error signifying it had no OS. I am trying to use a Snow Leopard disc to reinstall Mac OS X but when I get to the point where it asks to "Select the disk where you want to install Mac OS X" nothing shows up. I tried to repair the disk, it said no, invalid node structure. What do I do now?
Replace the disk
Back up what you can, or run data recovery software, or use a product such as DiskWarrior on the drive. If all the files on that volume are already backed up, erase it.

Your hard disk may be toast but try and erase and re-format, if you have a good backup.
I don't have a backup, but I have all my essential files for personal/work saved on an external hard drive. If I erase and reformat can I start from fresh or will I need to have some sort of backup?
You can start from a fresh OS installation.
